Overview

Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, is one of the most famous and sacred religious sites in Nepal. Located on a hilltop west of Kathmandu city, it offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important pilgrimage destination for both Buddhists and Hindus.

🏛️ History

Swayambhunath is believed to be over 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest religious sites in Nepal. According to legend, the Kathmandu Valley was once a large lake, and a divine lotus flower bloomed in its center. When the lake drained, the hill of Swayambhunath remained, and the stupa was built there to honor the sacred site.
